Was looking around today trying to find something to shoot. Something new. Something inspiring. Something to reawaken my passion for the craft.

I’d been feeling defeated off and on for years. There’s a saying that says something like “doing a job you hate is a good way to ruin a perfectly good hobby”. I tried to google it but couldn’t find the exact phrase.

At any rate, that’s kind of how it’s felt for a while. Photography was something I loved. And when I tried to make it a business it became just another annoying job. Several times I felt I should just quit. Go back to having it just be a hobby.

But I can’t quite do that. I need my photography to pay for itself because there’s no way my day job can pull that trick off. So, I need to remind myself of something I said at the start of the year, I need to go back to the kids table. Go back to just having fun. Do my own thing. If people like it enough to hire me for it, then great. I’ll charge through the nose for it because I’ll be the ONLY one who can give them what I can give them.

That really kicked up with this shot that I did by accident. Walking across the field I was deep in thought. I just happened to glance over and see the sun bounce off the snow…another step and it was gone…if I hadn’t glanced over I never would have seen it and this never would have been made.

Today the crew for the Bear Babes calendar got together and interviewed each other for some video segments to be used in promotional videos to help build awareness for the calendars.

Unfortunately, Steve’s dog Chloe has a bit of a panting issue…it’s really loud and is easily picked up by the audio gear. Not a great sound when you’re all alone on screen.

So, in an effort to calm her, or at least get her far away from the recording, I hung out with her in the basement…after a few minutes she was sound asleep.

Whoot! I’ve managed to go mostly 50 days! I think I might have missed a day or two but don’t quite recal and am currently too lazy to go back and check.

Todays image is a bit lame, but considering it’s where I spent a good chunk of my day, I didn’t have much else to photograph. I’m trying to get this slideshow done for a beautiful client who has waited too long as I’ve been far too picky about things and have done far too much experimenting at their expense. I’m hoping to get this done this weekend, or at the very least in time to give to them for next Friday. Here’s hoping all goes according to plan!

So, I’m getting a lot of work done this weekend but you can’t live life just for work. Miss Shauna and I kicked back for a break of watching some Mythbusters episode. She opted for a healthy snack of blackberries and Greek yoghurt. Mmmmmmm.

OOOOPS!!!!!! I forgot to post this!!!! This is just a lighting test but that vest I’m wearing is a prop for a character Mel and I are creating named James the Angry Photographer. He’s a crazy, energetic, ex-rockstar wannabe, nerd who wears that vest everywhere. He’s not really angry, he’s just british-ish. And what exactly does he do now? Well, you’re going to have to wait to find out!

Okay, slightly late shooting this but it’s still before bed so I say it counts! I was just going to pass it off as a failed day but then I had a thought I had to try.

The only “Photoshopping” done here was the conversion to black and white. Oh, and the image of my face was loaded in Photoshop if that counts…

Due to a flat tire I took the bus and LRT to work this morning. I was giddy with the prospects I had for getting great images in my journey. I was not let down and have two images from this morning’s ride plus a Dave a Day image that you can see if we’re Facebook friends!

Tonight a friend of mine upgraded to an iPhone from her Blackberry. While at her place showing her how to set it up and use iTunes with it I was lucky enough to witness the elusive and rare brown paper bag in a less than natural habitat for this creature. Even more extraordinary, I have proof that these creatures do, in fact, possess tails!

I have to give a big thanks to my beautiful friend and co-worker, Jennifer. She left this cute little Valentineon my desk today. No, it’s not like that, she gave one to everyone in her area just like we used to do in school! We were talking and she commented that it’s a beautiful day for everyone! I said, well, not everyone. She then expunged upon me her belief that you need to celebrate everything! That even though I may be single on Valentine’s Day, I’m not really alone.

I thought about that and it’s very true. Just by my nature I get along better with women than I do with guys. I probably get along just fine with guys, but it’s a different dynamic that I just find awkward. Anyway, as a result, I have several really good friends that are women. I care a great deal for each of them and, if circumstances allowed, could possibly even consider a couple of them relationship material.

Even the women I’m not exceptionally close to still find me to be a great friend. I am often consulted with for affairs of the heart. It’s not easy listening to tales of how someone I care about feels like they aren’t appreciated or truly loved by their other halves. I just want to hold them and tell them it will all be okay. Sometimes I wish I could just steal them away and give them what they so badly desire. But I can’t. They are with who they choose to be with and I fully respect that. I can do only two things. 1) Listen to them and offer my support, understanding, and if asked, guidance. 2) Just hope that the guy they are with will snap out of whatever funk he’s in and realize what an amazing and wonderful woman he’s got in his life. Or that he realizes they aren’t really a good fit and leaves her so she can go on to find the happiness she so desperately craves and deserves.

So to all the amazing women in my life, I wish you all a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

So, my Photoshop is causing me grief. I’m trying to do my Dave a Day for Saturday but Photyshop keeps crashing on me. So since I did this one entirely on my phone I shall post it first and then fight with Photyshop to get the other one up before I hit the sack.

I’m playing around with selective focus a lot right now and I’m seriously loving it. If I had the cash I would go out and buy a tilt-shift lens right now. Check it out!
